Getting a SIM or eSIM

Dhiraagu or Ooredoo, what to bring, and the eSIM route.

Draft (2026-10-01): being verified. Check the official sources below before acting.

Two networks

The two mobile operators are Dhiraagu and Ooredoo. Both have counters at Velana International Airport and shops across Malé and Hulhumalé.

Bring your passport

Every SIM must be registered to the buyer's passport. That's the law, so the shop will take your details. Operators also sell eSIMs online: you upload your passport and verify with a selfie, and the QR code arrives by email.

Tips

  • Get a local number early: banks, landlords, deliveries and Haama all work through WhatsApp on a local number.
  • Compare the operators' current packs on their websites; prices and data bundles change often.
